Ask Charm &c.

August 24, 2006

To lift a leaf from Tommaso, here we answer questions posed by search engine queries that lead to this blog.

  • Some variant of “steely dan review camden“: they were great.
  • latex beamer comic“: I know what you want, you bad bad person you, and I’m not telling you how to do that.  Actually, it’s extremely difficult to properly install TrueType fonts for use in the standard Linux TeX distribution (teTeX), as a couple of wasted afternoons of mine attest.  What is relatively simple, shockingly, is installing Type 1-style OpenType fonts (.otf files, should you have any).  Setting them up to use in teTeX is as simple as installing the LCDF Typetools, installing Fontools, then running the autoinst program.  (Or you can look here for a different route.)  Everything, including ligatures, can then be accessed with a simple \usepackage.
  • asner dalitz“: you may be seeking this.  Or this.  Or maybe neither.

    Hi superweak,

I was having a coffee at the vending machine yesterday, when prof. Bettini (former director of the Laboratori del Gran Sasso) casually asked me if Dalitz plots are still used nowadays. I said yes, and recalled Focus as an instance – and then thought about your post here.
Actually, are you using Dalitz plots in CLEO ? For sure you are, right ?
    Cheers,
    T.

    Hi Tommaso:

Certainly we do; there’s a nice talk here which summarizes public CLEO-c Dalitz work to date. Also see this talk discussing some of the impact our Dalitz measurements have on CP violation measurements at the B factories — there are some pretty neat connections there…

[REDACTED] But anyone who is interested in physics should also try it. Step on it, guys, as this is somewhat urgent – #1: consider for a moment the Einsteinian GR (general relativity)observer – the one in an accelerating frame of reference who can make only internal experiments. He has a test rocket firing at exactly the same rate as the frame, so that, of course, it remains stationary with respect to the frame.
Suddenly, he sees the rocket start off in the direction of travel of the frame, that is ‘upwards’ , How could he explain this :

#1 It could be that this is a misfiring(or malfunction) of the test rocket, which he can check by making measurements.
#2 Another possibility would be that a new, unknown form of energy has entered the frame which has affected only the experimental rocket
..Or it could be that the acceleration of the frame itself has reduced – the equivalent of mass-loss in the Einsteinian gravitational world-view.
What does this bode for the recently observed galactic expansion in the context of GR ?

    # Another question for particle physicists.(or the interested)
This question it seems has been ignored, or unasked,( I haven’t seen any investigation yet, though I intend to send CERN the question)and yet may have wide reaching significance- What happens to nearby, charged, especially as to radiation particles when pair annihilation of charged particles occurs ? Anyone figured that? (Note ; uncharged pair annihilation, between a neutron and antineutron ,would be relevant to the question. In the meanwhile, ignore it .)

    Speedy anwsers would be appreciated.

    Take care, guys.

    Sylvester
